So You Want to Start Your Own Business?

Every entrepreneurial endeavor is different and no checklist for starting a business is all inclusive. However, the successful establishment of any business requires that a set of pre-established steps be taken. The following are a list of issues you should be prepared to address and answer if you want to start your own business.

  1. Prepare a retail business plan on all aspects of the business.
  2. Locate or hire an accountant and attorney to advise you.
  3. Contact and consult with the Small Business Administration and additional agencies that offer free assistance and advice.
  4. File for a business permit or license with the appropriate national, state, and local authorities.
  5. Set up a bank account.
  6. Identify and secure capital.
  7. Identify and file necessary government papers.
  8. Identify and obtain necessary insurance.
  9. Determine space needs. Sign a lease and establish utilities if necessary.
  10. Establish an accounting system.
  11. Purchase necessary equipment.
  12. Contact necessary vendors and suppliers.
  13. Prepare an advertising campaign.
  14. Hire and train any necessary employees.
  15. Implement advertising campaign and open the business.
