CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Health care will be the topic of the next session of the 2009 program of Leadership West Virginia. The class of 2009 will convene September 17-18 in Huntington, W.Va. for the sixth of eight leadership sessions that are being held across the state. Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Marshall University and Huntington Internal Medicine Group will be hosting the two-day gathering, and the West Virginia Hospital Association will be the session’s sponsor.
During this session, the 2009 class will hear from a variety of speakers as well as participate in several activities. The class members will kick off the session on Thursday morning with tours of the Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Following the morning tours, the class will visit Marshall University where the leaders will undergo Leadership/Development training. This month’s training activity will be on meeting facilitation and will be provided by Leigh Chaney, Certified Meeting Facilitator and Director of Organization Development at NiSource. “Leigh’s workshop will allow the class to gain a better perspective of how to prepare for and facilitate meetings in today’s busy work environment,” said Pam Farris, Executive Director of Leadership West Virginia. That evening the class will gather for dinner at the Huntington Museum of Art.
Friday’s activities will be hosted by the Huntington Internal Medicine Group (HIMG) and begin with a panel discussion on “Health Information Technology-HIT”. Panelists will include Nathan Cantrell of HIMG, Glen Washington of Cabell-Huntington Hospital and Charles Wilson of St. Mary’s Hospital. Richard Miller, President, West Virginia Health Services, and a graduate of Leadership West Virginia, will moderate the panel.
The class members also will “Explore How the Health System Components Work” by taking part in an interactive presentation directed by the West Virginia Primary Care Association. The class will finish the day focused on Corporate Wellness. Katrina Mailloux, owner of PTK Fitness and a Leadership West Virginia graduate will lead this presentation.
“Health care is a timely and important issue in our state, and this is an excellent opportunity for the class to hear from individuals who have such diverse backgrounds in the health care profession,” Farris said.
Financial support at the present time for the Health Care Session is provided by West Virginia Hospital Association, Cabell Huntington Hospital, HADCO, Huntington Internal Medicine Group, Huntington Museum of Art, Jenkins Fenstermaker, PLLC, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Thornburg Insurance Agency, Inc., and the West Virginia Primary Care Association.
Leadership West Virginia is a statewide education and leadership development program affiliated with the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce. Supported by tuition and private and corporate contributions, the program aims to identify emerging leaders throughout West Virginia and enhance their knowledge of not only the challenges facing the state, but also of the diversity and the unique attributes that the Mountain State possesses. “Graduates take away an understanding of the state, but most importantly the program serves as an extensive network of professionals who can put their collective energy together to make the state a better place for business and for residents,” said Farris. “The cultivation of new leadership is of utmost importance to the future of West Virginia’s prosperity and progress”.
