Local to Global - West Virginia Protecting the Community and Beyond
On Thursday, August 20, 2009, the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) and the West Virginia High Technology Consortium (WVHTC) Foundation will present the Local to Global event at the I-79 Technology Park Research Center in Fairmont, West Virginia. This event is sponsored by Azimuth, Inc., ManTech, Innovative Management & Technology Services (IMTS) and Northrop Grumman Information Systems. The general public, business community, law enforcement, and academia are invited to attend this free event which is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m., followed by welcome remarks from West Virginia leaders including Congressman Alan B. Mollohan, State Auditor Glen B. Gainer, III, West Virginia State Police Deputy Superintendent Bruce Sloan, and James Estep, President of the West Virginia High Technology Consortium (WVHTC) Foundation.
As part of this event, NW3C will highlight the accomplishments of its ongoing partnerships with federal and state entities. One example, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between NW3C and the FBI. IC3 recently developed the Internet Complaint Search & Investigation System (ICSIS) which enables law enforcement to track and manage Internet fraud investigations. Law enforcement will have a chance, at this event, to be trained on this cutting-edge tool. NW3C also partners with West Virginia University and the West Virginia State Police, forming the West Virginia Cyber Crime Cooperative (WV3C). WV3C is currently working on research, education, and the training of law enforcement personnel in computer security and forensics.
A key component of this event will be to showcase organizations and initiatives within West Virginia’s High-Tech Corridor that specialize in protecting our community. Participating organizations include Azimuth, Inc., Backbone Security, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), DOD Techmatch, eCrimes, Electronic Warfare Associates, Inc. (EWA), Innovative Management & Technology Services (IMTS), IC3, ManTech, National Center for Electronics Recycling, Northrop Grumman Information Systems, Robotics-Xbots, Respondcomm, and WV3C. Representatives from these organizations will be on hand to exhibit their unique capabilities, products and services.
Because education is a key factor in ensuring the overall safety of our citizens, those in attendance will also have the opportunity to participate in specialized topic seminars. Dale Smith, Training Manager with NW3C, will be discussing crimes that target seniors, one of the fastest growing Victim populations. This presentation will include information on the types of crimes being committed, cautionary red flags, and appropriate avenues of response. In addition, NW3C’s Research Manager, John Kane, will be delivering information on recent Internet crimes and strategies to combat them.
Sergeant Christopher Casto with the West Virginia State Police will be presenting a special forum on Internet Safety for Children. Sergeant Casto oversees the State Police Digital Forensics Unit, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit, as well as WV3C. As part of Sergeant Casto’s presentation, Alicia Kozakiewicz will share her personal story of Internet victimization. In 2002, Ms. Kozakiewicz fell prey to an Internet predator who transported her to another state and held her captive for four terrifying days. She was rescued with help from the Virginia ICAC and has since made it her mission to bring awareness to the dangers of online predators.
There will be something for everyone attending this event. The public will be educated on current crime issues and how to protect themselves. Law enforcement will have the opportunity to be trained on ICSIS. Academia and local businesses will have an opportunity to network and learn about emerging crime issues. Kids will have the opportunity to meet McGruff the Crime Dog. Froggy Radio will be broadcasting live at the event from 10am-2pm. A police cruiser and K-9 unit will be on site. Refreshments will be provided.
