Generation Morgantown Educational Committee Announces First Seminar

Are you worried about your personal finances or are you starting to feel the effects of the recession? Planning and preparation can not only help you survive, but position you for the future by taking advantage of lower interest rates and a buyers’ market.

The Generation Morgantown Educational Committee is hosting a seminar, presented by local lenders and financial professionals, to help individuals and families deal with these opportunities and issues. Topics will include consolidating and reducing debt, improving and protecting your credit and qualifying for a mortgage. The seminar is free and is open to all.

Leslie Snyder Lester, Assistant Vice President and Mortgage Loan Officer with Centra Bank, will lead the seminar and discussion. Centra Bank is a recognized leader in local residential lending. Ms. Snyder will focus on the mortgage process and the pre-qualifications for a loan. Additionally she will help participants determine how much home can they afford, where to get a down payment and what does their credit report “say” about them. She will discuss options for the first time home buyer and for others looking to move or refinance.

Other speakers include Jessie Reckart coordinator for the Fairmont-Morgantown Housing Authority’s Morgantown Homecoming Program. The program’s mission is to promote home ownership and housing choice in Morgantown’s in-town neighborhoods. Ms. Reckart will talk about the benefits of purchasing a home in-town, available properties, and the programs overall vision for home ownership in Morgantown. Sales in the program are not contingent on a buyer’s income.

Certified Credit and Housing Credit Counselor Jackie Goff will discuss basic credit issues, including obtaining a free copy of your credit report, dealing with and reducing debt, improving your credit score and report, avoiding scams and identity theft, and bankruptcy. “It’s important for people to know all of the options before they make a life decision such as buying a house or declaring bankruptcy,” stated Ms. Goff who works for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of North Central West Virginia. “We can all do things to make our financial situation better, such as develop a budget, reduce or consolidate debt, work with a credit counselor, doing nothing should not be an option” she added.

Shape up financially for the year ahead, join us at 8:00 am, Thursday, February 5, in the private dining room of the Regatta Bar & Grille, Waterfront Place Hotel. The seminar is free and open to all. Breakfast will be available, but is the responsibility of the attendee. To RSVP or for more information please contact Jack Thompson at (304) 216-0220 or by e-mail at tojackthompson@aol.com.
