Business, Economic Development Issues Focus Of Leadership Class 2009 In Parkersburg

(Charleston, W.Va.) — The third session of the 2009 Leadership West Virginia program will be held in Parkersburg at The Blennerhassett Hotel from May 14-15, 2009. As part of their ongoing training and education, the class members will discuss important business and economic development issues and review strategies for West Virginia. Session #3 is being hosted by session partner AEP-Appalachian Power.

Leadership West Virginia is a statewide education program affiliated with the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce that works to identify emerging leaders throughout the state and enhance their knowledge of challenges and opportunities facing the Mountain State.

This session begins Thursday, May 14 at The Blennerhassett Hotel with a welcome from Keith Burdette, who heads The Area Roundtable. The class will undergo communication/media training with Jim Reader of Charles Ryan Associates. The class also will hear a discussion on Understanding Each Other’s Perspective: Business and the Media. This discussion will be provided by Reader, Larry Malone, Owner of Malone Consulting Services and Juliet Terry, President of Vision Shared and member of LWV 2008. The group will travel to Holl’s Chocolates for a tour of the company’s facilities and a “meet and greet” with the company’s President, Dominique Holl. Holl is a LWV alumnus, class of 1999. The day will end with a historical tour on Blennerhassett Island.

The session on Friday, May 15, will start with STEPs To Economic Growth — An Interactive Practicum on Economic Development, presented by Patrick D. Kelly, Esq. Kelly is the Managing Partner of Steptoe & Johnson Charleston office and also is an alumnus of the Leadership program, class of 1994. Steve Roberts will present the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 policy papers. Roberts is the Chamber’s President. The session then delves into “The Rule of Law: Perspectives on Legal and Judicial Reform in WV”, which will be presented by Dr. Russell Sobel, Professor of Economics at West Virginia University.
