An article by Jessica Legg, posted in the Times West Virginian, states that the West Virginia University Statewide Student Business Plan Competition has chosen its winners.
Lifestyle Category - Robert Loehr, Mechanical Engineering, WVU
Innovation Category - James Kearns, Multi-Disciplinary Studies, WVU
The article goes on to explain the competition. There are 3 stages to the competition. The competitors must first electronically submit a 3-5 page summary of the business idea. The 10 top teams in the two categories must then pitch their business idea within 2 minutes to a panel of judges. Finally, the top 5 teams in each category give a 20-minute presentation, plus a 20-minute question-and-answer session.
According to the article, Robert Loehr’s idea was SpokeArt - creating jewelry and accessories out of old bike parts. James Kearns’ idea is reinforcing buildings with faulty foundations by using a drill rig to place supports, called Deep Sticks Drilling. Both winners walked away with $10,000 to build upon their ideas.
